She Shed Dreams: Work Table Redo

My She Shed is a lot of things all rolled into one. It will be my coffee shop, my craft room, my bar, my yoga studio, my girls night hangout and my potting shed. Seriously, all the things. The previous owner was a master carpenter and used the shed as a workshop. He built a work table that runs the width of the shed with a smaller hinged table that can be propped up when you want it but out of the way when you don't need it. It is perfect for a bar to hold my espresso machine, wine for girls night and drinks for parties!

The work table was...a work table, so the wood had taken a beating. I really like that it's distressed and I know I'll continue to beat it up with whatever project I'm working on. The hinged table is adorable and I plan to take Al on a date to The Hinged Table, like it's a restaurant after the kids go to sleep. No babysitter required! Although I like the character of the table, there's no way I'm serving wine or laying crafts on that nasty table so I busted out the sander. I use a Black and Decker Random Orbit Sander and I love that it's tiny and you can grip it in your palm.

I first removed the black tape, vacuumed the surface and wiped down all the corners to get rid off the cobwebs...eww. I sanded first with 60 grit paper and I had to use some force to get most of the oil, cigarette burns and tape adhesive off. After wiping the surface again, I sanded with 120 grit paper to smooth out any rough edges and get rid of splinters. I don't want it to be perfect, I like that it has imperfections and I want to see them.

I stained the bar with Dark Walnut by Minwax. I like to use an old cut up towel to apply my stain because it's less messy than pouring or painting it on. I used 2 coats of semi-gloss polyurethane to finish it. The shed is small and has no windows so it will take weeks to get rid of the smell of stain and poly. I have an exhaust fan (compliments of the previous owner) running during the day to help. I'm so happy with how it turned out and I can't wait to serve up my first latte at The Hinged Table!

Thanks for following along with my daily shed updates. Leave a comment and let me know what you'd do in your own backyard She Shed. Check out my Instagram @DoneInADayMom for more pictures and projects I'm working on.

The table is really the focal point and the first thing you see when you walk in.

I think this is black electrical tape and it was pretty hard to get off.

All the tape is finally gone.

The 60 grit paper removed a lot of the surface damage from all the spills and scratches

Sanded smooth but I didn't bother getting everything off because the dark stain would cover it.

Here's how the hinged table looks when it's up. I'll be on the lookout for the perfect branch from my yard to use instead of this metal thing.

I love how dark wood stain brings out beautiful details, even in hardware store stock and scrap wood.

Today at The Hinged Table, I'm burning Warm Tobacco Pipe by DW Home. If you don't already know, DW Home is my favorite candle company and I have lots of different ones burning throughout my home. Why I love this particular scent is a story for another day but my great uncle, who taught me how to work with wood, used to smoke a pipe. The smell brings back great memories for me.
